US closes consulate in Mexico due to security threat

Playa del Carmen: Mexico Travel Alert Issued By US

"‎The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City received information about a security threat in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico", reads the security alert.

Playa del Carmen is located about 46 miles (76 km) south of Mexico's top beach destination, Cancun, part of a long strip of white sand beach-front resorts that attracts worldwide tourists.

It adds that the US consular agency in Playa del Carmen "will be closed until further notice".

On Feb 21, an explosive device went off on a popular tourist ferry in Playa del Carmen and injured more than 20 people.

In an email to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert quoted the notice on the website and added, "We urge all travelers to review our information on before they travel".

"All tourism and economic activity in Playa del Carmen continues in a normal manner", the state government wrote in a statement, noting that hotel occupancy at the resort was 80 percent.

Claire Newell with Travel Best Bets has been telling her clients to be more aware of their surroundings when heading to that popular destination.

The blast aboard the Caribbean ferry last month injured 25 people, two of which were American and three Canadian.

Responding to the alert, the local governor's office said USA visitors remain welcome in the state of Quintana Roo and Mexico as a whole. "Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance".

A subsequent probe earlier this month also uncovered undetonated explosives on a different tourist ferry boat owned by the same company.

"Avoid tourist ferries travelling in the region until further notice, be vigilant and monitor local media (including social media)", the advisory said.

"We take our obligation to provide information to USA citizens seriously as evidenced by the clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information we release worldwide", Nauert said. The state of Quintana Roo also comes with a Level 2 warning.

The Canadian government has issued a new travel warning for a tourist hot spot in Mexico over a potential security threat. It specifically mentioned risks of traveling to certain parts due to the ongoing cartel violence and warned that US citizens have been the victims of violent crimes including homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery.
