In the largest deal in its history, Johnson & Johnson is boosting its roster of medicines for rare diseases by acquiring Swiss biotech company Actelion for $30 billion. "The agreement came after negotiations in which Johnson & Johnson walked away from discussions in mid-December, only for the companies to restart exclusive talks about a deal a few days later", Chad Bray reports for the New York Times . The Justice Department is also trying to block a similar deal between Cigna and Anthem, but that case has yet to be decided. A committee of OPEC and non-OPEC countries responsible for monitoring compliance with a global agreement to reduce oil output is set to meet for the first time in Vienna on Sunday. The deal to cut output marked a dramatic reversal of OPEC's previous Saudi-led strategy of flooding the market to squeeze US shale oil producers, which need a higher oil price to make money. Economists had expected a bigger increase of 1.7 per cent year-over-year in December. Sales rose in five of 11 major categories marking 45 per cent of the industry total. On a seasonally-adjusted basis, prices rose 0.3% in December following a 0.1% gain in November.
